Thunderjets over Korea Part I

Retail price: $6.70

The Tamiya F-84G, being the current definitive 1/48th scale kit of the subject, is a worthy subject of aftermarket decals. AeroMaster released three sets of Korean War decals for the Tamiya kit. This is set number 1 of 3.

Thunderjets over Korea Part I supplies decals for three subjects, on two sheets, along with two colorful information sheets plus an instruction sheet. This set is for FS-454, FS-197, and FS-360. Decals for FS-464 are one of the three sets furnished with the Tamiya kit. There are differences in interpretation of how to break out the decals; for example, the Tamiya decals for the tail and rudder have the Bu. No. imprinted, and AeroMaster has them as a separate overlay decal. The primary difference, however, is that the AeroMaster interpretation of the yellow tends more toward orange, while the Tamiya decals are a much brighter shade of yellow. Although a few Thunderjets wore schemes as colorful as FS-454, most were more mundane; FS-197 is one of those, bearing simple yellow and white colors. This aircraft does offer the modeler a departure from the "out of the box" experience, as it was equipped with auxiliary refueling probes for the ferry flight to Korea. The third aircraft, FS-360, was the first Thunderjet to complete 1,000 hours of sorties in the war, and was appropriately marked with acknowledging script and rows of bombs painted on the fuselage. It should be noted, however, that FS-460 was an E, not a G. As the Tamiya kit is a G, the appropriate panel lines, the refueling door lines, and the auxiliary intake doors should be deleted to correctly represent the E model.

Registration is perfect on both sheets, and the colors look great. Also, both the decal base and the inks appear to be thinner than those used for the Tamiya kit decals. I have not used any of the AeroMaster Thunderjet decals at this writing. My two unbuilt Thunderjets are for another project, so I will not be using these decals in the near future. However, based on my experience with other AeroMaster decals, and the appearance of these sheets, it is safe to say they are well worth the purchase price.
