"As the pressure of war brought new developments to aviation with breathtaking rapidity, the War Department set up an engineering laboratory and flying field at Dayton, Ohio, known as McCook Field, in the fall of 1917. With the mission to research, develop, test, and evaluate US military aircraft, McCook became the center for aircraft and engine development.
